Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get an eCOP (Certificate of Proposal) account?

The eCOP application has been discontinued. The new process involves filling out a PDF form. You can find the new COP, COP Continuation Page, and COP instructions on OSP's website at http://research.uthscsa.edu/osp/forms_ut.shtml#COP.

Can I login with my UTHSCSA domain account?

If you have a "uthscsa.edu" email address linked to your IDEAS profile, you have the option of logging into IDEAS with your UTHSCSA domain account credentials (the username and password you use to access your UTHSCSA email). This is a new feature only available to IDEAS users that have a "uthscsa.edu" email address set in their IDEAS profile.

If you do not have an email address set on your IDEAS account, choose "Edit Profile" from the IDEAS main menu to set one.

What are the browser requirements?

We recommend Firefox for use with IDEAS. Your browser must accept cookies from the IDEAS website. And in most applications, JavaScript must be enabled.

Can I use my iPhone/iPad/Mobile Device with IDEAS?

Yes, but remember both your username and password are case sensitive. If you have autocorrect and/or autocapitalization on, the username or password entered may not be what you expect (autocorrect/autocapitalization could change it). Please double check as you are typing in both your username and password to make sure they are correct.

Also, your browser must accept cookies from the IDEAS website.

How can I avoid the popup message "The page contains both secure and nonsecure items" in Internet Explorer while using IDEAS?

This popup message happens only on Internet Explorer, not Firefox (the recommended browser for IDEAS), and is caused by a security patch that has been installed. To turn off that prompt when using IDEAS, which secures information in another way, follow the steps below:
  1. Login to IDEAS completely. Whenever you get that prompt, click on Yes each time until you complete the steps.
  2. On the Internet Explorer toolbar, click on Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options from the pulldown menu.
  4. Click on the Security tab in the dialog box.
  5. Click on the icon for the Internet web content zone.
  6. Click on the Custom Level button at the bottom of the security dialog box.
  7. Scroll down the various settings until you find the settings for Miscellaneous.
  8. Under Miscellaneous, find the item Display mixed content. Click on Enable instead of Prompt.
  9. Click on OK in that dialog box.
  10. You will get another pop-up warning "Are you sure you want to change the security setting for this zone?" Click on Yes.
  11. Click on OK again under security in the dialog box. The pop-ups should stop from then on.

What are the password rules for IDEAS accounts?

IDEAS enforces the following password policy:
  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long.
  • Passwords must contain at least one uppercase, one lowercase, and one special character or number.
  • Passwords must be significantly different from the previous password.
  • Passwords expire after 60 days. (Expire means you can still login, but will be prompted to choose a new password.)

Why does my account get deactivated?

Our security policy requires your IDEAS account to be deactivated after 60 days of non-use. To activate your account, send an email to IDEAS support at ideas@uthscsa.edu, include your username, and request that your account be reactivated.
